Should I Buy a Laptop Or Desktop Computer?

Buying a new computer is a major purchase for most people, and the toss-up between a portable laptop or a powerful desktop is a sticking point for a lot of people.

I could discuss the pros and cons of each option, and then let you decide based on what option best fits your needs. But I'm not going to...

My recommendation would be to get a laptop.

Laptop technology has been evolving at a rapid pace over the last few years and the modern laptop has more than enough power for the average home user. While laptops will generally be less powerful and have less storage ability than a desktop of a similar price, the portability is such a huge plus that it's worth the sacrifice.

While desktop machines will generally have superior hardware, this isn't a major issue for most people. If you need more disk space you can always buy an external hard disk (that's if you ever need more storage space). The other aspects, such as a faster processor, and not going to be an issue unless you are doing very intensive tasks - surfing the net, sending email, etc are not intensive tasks. Just ensure the laptop has a reasonable amount of RAM - at least 2GB, at the time of writing this.

Wireless Internet means you can take the laptop on the deck in summer, or sit by the fire in winter (but not too close!). Or just sit on the couch and work while watching TV. The freedom offered is just brilliant.

I should add a caveat: this advice is for an average home user.
